Your contribution to Real Antarctic Science

Under Sail

ANTARCTIC SCIENCE CAMP

10 Days in Antarctic
Small group: Up to 17 participants
No scientific background required

A real Antarctic expedition with a scientific purpose

THE EXPERIENCE
What you see becomes scientific data
— and your contribution can continue beyond the trip.
For example, you may learn how to photograph a humpback whale’s fluke for identification, record the sighting and contribute a suitable image to Happywhale, where it can be compared with previous and future sightings of the same animal.
The scientific program shapes the journey — from your first questions for a scientist to the observations you collect and the results that continue after you return.
Live aboard a sailing vessel, take part in genuine field research and explore one of the most remarkable places on Earth.

The program has a shared scientific core, but you choose how deeply you take part. Try different research tasks, follow the questions that interest you and explore at your own pace.
Scientific participation is always voluntary.
What you see gains scientific meaning — and your contribution can continue beyond the trip.
Discover Antarctica and help study it. Learn what to observe, try real research methods and collect data that scientists can use.

Your freedom to explore Antarctica

Explorer and Citizen Scientist

YOUR ROLE
Citizen scientist recording wildlife observations during a landing in Antarctica

From research questions to real data

HOW IT WORKS

See the bigger picture

Your observations and photographs contribute to an open field journal and can support ongoing research after the expedition.

Continue the research under sail

As the expedition continues along the Antarctic Peninsula, a Citizen Science Coordinator supports your participation, organizes research activities, explains the methods and helps review your observations.

Take part in fieldwork

Count wildlife, photograph whale flukes for identification, review camera-trap images and record observations.

Learn from a scientist

Spend the first two days working with a scientist near Bellingshausen Station while living aboard the sailing vessel. Learn the research questions, field methods and rules for working in Antarctica.

The research is carried out within a real scientific program developed by the University of Maritime Practice and Arctic Tourism, contributing valuable observations and data to the broader international effort to study and understand Antarctic ecosystems
The sailing vessel is your home and research base.

Share daily life with a like-minded group, join evening discussions and, if you wish, help the crew and learn about sailing. There is also time for photography, walks and rest.

King George Island
Chile, Punta Arenas
The program begins with two days near King George Island, in the area of Bellingshausen Station.

Scientific work is planned at six sites, with additional stops along the route.

Landings and the itinerary depend on weather, ice and local conditions.

Your contribution lives on

AFTER THE EXPEDITION
As research results emerge, the university will share reports and stories about studies that use expedition data — so you can continue following the scientific work your group contributed to.
After the voyage, you will also receive an expedition report, a certificate of participation and a letter of appreciation from the University of Maritime Practice and Arctic Tourism.
Your group’s observations, photographs and field records will become part of an open field journal, allowing you to revisit the story of the expedition and see what was collected together.
