About Greenland

Greenland is a land of contrasts: despite its name, 80% of the surface is covered in ice. Located in the North Atlantic, this massive island is the world’s largest non-continental landmass. Only two-thirds of it lie within the Arctic Circle, but given its climate and nature, the entire territory is considered as an integral part of the Arctic.
During summer and early autumn, Greenland is a top destination for expedition cruises. The colorful tundra, mountainous landscapes, and white and blue ice in all forms set the perfect backdrop for an Arctic adventure. And when the skies are dark, travelers have a chance to witness a spectacular show known as the Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights.
With its rugged coastline, majestic glaciers, and deep fjords, Greenland is a true wonder of the natural world. On land and at sea, the pristine ecosystem is protected via many national parks and reserves. The island is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including whales and seals, as well as a small population of Inuit people who have lived there for centuries.

Why travel to Greenland?

A Greenland cruise offers something for everyone. History buffs will find the area to be a treasure trove of fascinating cultural sites, including many museums and indigenous villages that give a glimpse into the island’s rich past. Nature photographers will be in awe of the beautiful landscape, the intricate maze of fjords, and the ever-present ice.
Wildlife enthusiasts will have the chance to observe unique Arctic animals, such as polar bears and whales, in their natural habitat. Adventurers will revel in the many landings and hiking trips along the coast. And for those seeking a sense of peace and solitude, Greenland's remote location and sparse population make for a rare opportunity to disconnect from the world.
Travel to Greenland with us on the Wylde Swan sailing ship
We will sail to the area of unspoilt Arctic nature and watch giant icebergs from the deck of our topsail schooner. You’ll hear the crack of falling ice, sail along the longest fjord in the world and discover what a polar day is like.
Greenland’s fauna is quite diverse: living in an ecosystem that goes back thousands of years, the animals are well-adapted to survive in the harsh Arctic conditions. Their resilience and beauty will leave a lasting impression on anyone wishing to explore Greenland.
Prehistoric-looking musk oxen and hardy reindeer can be found grazing on the tundra. Nimble Arctic foxes and hares casually dart across the landscape. As for marine wildlife, lucky visitors may spot bowhead whales, Greenland whales, belugas, and humpbacks, as well as narwhals and bearded seals. Finally, there is a rich tapestry of birdlife, with species such as geese, eiders, and loons.

Destination highlights

Main points

Llulissat Icefjord

The Ilulissat Icefjord is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for holding one of the most active glaciers in the world. When this solid cold beauty comes to life, numerous icebergs are born. With a thunderous sound of ice cracking, large chunks break off into the sea.

Scoresbysund, East Greenland

Scoresbysund is the largest fjord system on Earth, extending for over 200 miles into the frozen interior of Greenland’s east coast. Here, in an intricate tree-like network of fjords, wildlife is especially abundant. Families of walruses and harbor seals can be found hauled out on the ice along the shoreline.

Nuuk

The capital of Greenland, the town of Nuuk, is a hub of culture and history. The National Museum is a must-visit attraction for those interested in learning about the country’s Viking past. Travelers get to see the many Inuit artifacts on display.

Notheast Greenland National Park

The world’s largest national park is the epitome of a remote wilderness. The rugged terrain begs for a hike, but a casual stroll along the coast is a worthy alternative. Arctic hares, foxes, and musk oxen greet the occasional visitor with a camera-worthy performance.

Sermilik fjord

A tall ship expedition passenger can expect to be cruising through many fjords, but Sermilik deserves a special notice. This tranquil location is the perfect place for seeing the Greenland ice sheet up close and spotting the gentle giants that frequent this area — whales.
